Reboot for Security Update

Advance notice: PHP 5.3 and Magic Quotes

This is advance notice that soon we will be updating PHP to the latest release of PHP 5.3 (we currently run the latest release of PHP 5.2). PHP 5.3 is not fully compatible with code which was written for PHP 5.2, so it is important that you make sure any PHP scripts you're using will work with PHP 5.3 before this update is performed -- in most cases people will find that their scripts are already compatible, but we strongly advise all customers to make sure that this is the case for them. A full list of the incompatible changes in PHP 5.3 can be found at: http://valca.to/php53
We will also be disabling PHP's Magic Quotes feature at the same time, as this feature has been deprecated by the PHP developers and is due to be removed completely in a future release. For now, customers who still need this feature can re-enable it by following the instructions for creating a custom php.ini file at http://valca.to/phpini -- however, we recommend against relying on the Magic Quotes feature where possible.
A precise date and time for these changes will be announced closer to the time, but this is provisionally scheduled for the afternoon of March 13, 2010.

We'll shortly be rebooting both servers in order to apply a security update. SH1 will be rebooted at 1600 UTC and SH2 will be rebooted at 1615 UTC (a little under two hours from now). Each server will be unavailable for approximately ten minutes.

Both servers will be rebooted shortly in order to apply a security update. SH1 will be rebooted at 1900 UTC and SH2 will be rebooted at 1915 UTC today (20-35 minutes from now). This will take approximately ten minutes, during which time services will be unavailable.

We'll be performing various software updates on these servers on Monday, June 1, 2009 between 13:30 and 17:30 UTC. These are minor updates, so there shouldn't be much disruption to service, though both servers will need to be rebooted which will make each of them unavailable for about ten minutes.

We will be performing major operating system and cPanel updates on these servers on Friday, February 20, 2009 between 13:00 and 20:00 UTC. This will involve rebooting the servers, which will result in services being unavailable for approximately ten minutes per server. Other services may also be unavailable for brief periods while updated software is installed.
We will add updates to this service notice during this maintenance.
High CPU Load

The CPU load is currently very high, causing database driven sites to be unresponsive. We are working to bring the load back down to normal. Our apologies for the inconvenience.

We will be applying an operating system update to all of the servers which host our customers' web sites; this will require the servers to be rebooted, which will result in a maximum of ten minutes down time for each server.
This will be performed starting at 15:00 UTC on Friday, January 23, 2009. Our billing and support systems will not be affected.
